What is Agile?
In the huge simplifying the word Agile defines two areas, given activities organization and what is more, a state of mind. In the terms of the work delivery, Agile is a family of management methods and work organization. It includes specific implementations, among which the most popular are Scrum, Kanban and XP.
Agile management methods dominate in the IT management area, but the current trend on the market shows the use of them outside IT. This approach can be used practically anywhere where we have contact with a complex, unpredictable and variable manufacturing process (product / service), where determining in advance and freezing requirements is not possible, or results in solutions that lack of fit to the real need.
What is Lean?
Lean as described above Agile is both a way of given activities organization, and what is more, a state of mind. In the terms of the work delivery, Lean is not so much a methods family, rather a set of values and principles that are critical during leaning out processes, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency.
Lean management methods derive from traditional processes and manufacturing, e.g. vehicles manufacturing. Those assumptions and principles were transferred to the IT world, currently dominate management wherever any workflow exists, that can be measured and evolutionary optimized.
Agile transformation programs
Since on the IT market – and increasingly also in other sectors – business value delivery speed, reviewing the assumptions and responding to change matters more than blindly following a plan, organizations now recognize the need for a transformation.
It is clear that transformation is a process of change, a change that must be correctly initialized, introduced and maintained, so that the new approach, assumptions, ideas and behaviour will root into organizational culture.
