Professional Scrum Master

Duration and language:

Onsite/online training - 16h - 2 days each 8 hours (including breaks).

Training is provided in English. A Polish version is also available.

Target group:

The training is intended for:

  • novice Scrum Masters,
  • change agents, internal trainers,
  • specialists, members of operational teams,
  • department/team leaders and managers.
Those who want to grow the organization in the spirit of Agile and Lean.

Training preconditions:

The Professional Scrum Master™ training is intended for people with at least one year of experience in Scrum or who have already participated in an introductory course. People usually come with their own challenges that they would like to share and work out a way to improve together on the forum. If you are looking for an introductory training to Scrum, we recommend the Applying Professional Scrum™ training.

Price includes:

  • Preparation and training performed by an expert, accredited Scrum.org Trainer (PST), an experienced Agile and Lean consultant.
  • Effective training in a small group - on average 6-12 people.
  • Accredited Scrum.org training materials and requisites.
  • License for performing the training (payable to Scrum.org).
  • A 200$ voucher for the PSM I assessment, 40% discount for PSM II assessment and certificate of training completion, issued by Valkir Academy (in English).
  • In case of taking the PSM I assessment within 14 days and failing, the participant is entitled to a second attempt at no additional cost.
  • 14 Personal Development Units (PDUs) for PMI PMP members.
  • Lunch and catering (drinks and snacks). Not applicable to online training.
  • Trainer’s travel and expenses (T&E). Not applicable to online training.

Certification:

Each participant completing the training will receive an non-expiring voucher to attempt the PSM I assessment and 40% discount for PSM II assessment. The assessment (in English) takes place online on Scrum.org website. In case of taking the PSM I exam within 14 days and failing, the participant is entitled to a second attempt at no additional cost.

What is the Professional Scrum Master™ training?

Professional Scrum Master™ is an accredited training from Scrum.org, expanding knowledge and building essential competencies to perform the role of Scrum Master in the organization. The participants, through hands-on experience and discussed examples, will dive into the practices of improving overall organizational effectiveness.

On the one hand, the discussed program will allow to better understand and support the mechanisms of self-organization/self-management, build shared responsibility and remove organizational obstacles blocking the potential of proper Scrum introduction in the organization. On the other hand, the program provides practices and tools to better manage risk, plan, measure and monitor the continuous delivery of business value.

Thanks to this training, current or aspiring Scrum Masters will gain competences to support not only Developers, but also the Product Owner and other stakeholders, scaling agile management to the entire organization. In turn, participants in leadership and managerial positions will understand what a Scrum Master does on a daily basis and how much value it can bring to the entire organization.

Who is behind this?

Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland are considered to be Scrum’s fathers, although the approach itself is based on self-organizing teams, popularized by the famous publication “The New New Product Development Game” written by Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka, published in the Harvard Business Review in 1986.

Over 300 Scrum.org trainers around the world every day support the development of management by organizing practical training, learning through games, workshops and effective practices.

    • A brief reminder of Scrum theory, pillars and values.
    • Roles and accountabilities in Scrum and how they relate to positions in the organization.
    • Events and processes in Scrum, their duration, frequency.
    • Scrum artifacts and fostering their transparency.
     
  2. Team and addressing the human factor
    • Differences between a workgroup and a team.
    • What is and how self-organization and self-management work, along with an explanation of what is necessary for them to function properly.
    • Characteristics of a cross-functional team, division of competences and accountability.
     
  3. Scrum Master's role and accountability in supporting the Scrum Team
    • Methods for increasing the effectiveness of Scrum events and processes.
    • Supporting self-organization/self-management and taking responsibility for performing activities.
    • Protecting the team from negative external factors.
     
  4. Scrum Master's role and accountability in supporting Developers
    • Shaping the Definition of Done from the technical side of the process and software quality.
    • Techniques for Technical Debt assessment and approaches for successive debt reduction.
     
  5. Scrum Master's role and accountability in supporting the Product Owner
    • The essence of Agile product management, Product Backlog management.
    • Increment as a result of the work performed in the Sprint. Definition of Done emergence.
    • A brief overview of strategic planning techniques, requirements management, progress monitoring and assessment.
    • Product Backlog Refinement, when and how it can be used.
     
  6. Scrum Master's role and accountability in the holistic support of the organization
    • Methods of analyzing and addressing the ineffectiveness of organizational processes.
    • Removing organizational impediments by engaging colleagues to act.
    • Building and rooting new habits of effective action.
    • Introduction to adaptive change management, going beyond IT, scaling agility.

What benefits do you get?

The training allows participants to better understand their organization, the challenges it faces and more effectively steer its growth. It contains theoretical knowledge and practical methods taken from the idea of ​​systems theory, complexity theory, self-organization/self-management, psychology of motivation, product management, change management and many other areas.

As a result of this training, participants from different areas of the organization will:

  • know and understand aspects needed to effectively stimulate organization growth and teams towards agility,
  • acquire skills necessary to apply mentioned methods in practice,
  • understand how and why new methods can positively affect their work.
Whenever possible, topics presented during the training are explained through a game/exercise that allows to apply the learned practice or principle in the business context. Exercise or game usually ends with a debrief and discussion on how to adapt the presented practices to the participants’ context.
